Build something that turns up at a market every weekend
A market manager spends their evenings chasing payments, their mornings hunting an insurance certificate that expired in April, and their weekends on administration nobody signed up for. Removing that is the whole job here.
The work, and who you do it with
You will spend real time at markets, with the managers who run them, the vendors who trade in them, and the people who turn up on a Saturday to buy.
Farmers market management software, sold to the people who run markets. A market organization has applications to take, a site to lay out, documents that expire, invoices to raise and books that have to reconcile at year end. Most software in this category does one of those well. We are building the one where all of it is good, which is slower and is the entire point.
None of that gets designed at a desk. It means going to markets and standing in them while they are running, and talking to the people in them: the managers, the vendors trading beside each other every week, and the customers the whole thing exists for. Managers are smart, busy, not technical, and have been let down by software before, so they will tell you exactly what is wrong with what you built. That is the best working condition there is.
Which means you are not only building software. A market is a piece of the community it sits in, usually held together by a small organization with not much help and a lot of goodwill. Making that possible to run is the product. The software is how we do it, and the relationship with the people running it is the other half of the job.
Most software work is a number moved for an executive you will never meet, in a business whose customers you will never see. This is the opposite of that. You can go and stand in the thing you built on a Saturday morning, among the people it was built for, and watch it work.
